About Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve

The Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve is a roughly 9,000-acre nature preserve off Clinton Keith Road, protecting rare Engelmann oak woodland, native bunchgrass prairie, and seasonal vernal pools found almost nowhere else in Southern California.

History and Significance: The Nature Conservancy began protecting the plateau in 1983 with an initial purchase of 3,100 acres, as development pressure across Riverside County threatened the unique habitat of the area. Later acquisitions with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife expanded the reserve, which now protects two species of fairy shrimp in its vernal pools, one found nowhere else on Earth, and serves as a wildlife corridor connecting to the Cleveland National Forest.
